Prossimamente a Berlino.

The crazy explorers of the new are back and on stage. Soon in Berlin. WhoMadeWho, the Danish trio from Copenhagen, will perform at Watergate Open Air and, there, will also give us the opportunity to shoot our first mini doc, directed by Tania Caporaso, which will reveal the news and some secrets of the band: from the relationships with many international creatives, to the desire to submit their new live show at Burning Man in Nevada, up to the musical improvisation that led them to record about one hundred and fifty songs last year. Their music has been always hanging in the balance between electronic, post-punk and a pinch of psychedelia. Plus electronic rock, experimental dance, indie rock and dance punk. A never ending party.
The outgoing artists are acknowledged to be the best live act performers in Europe. And, I must say, with their pinch of whimsy, the bold Scandinavians mask pretty well their role as good and dedicated fathers, trying to balance their rock star life with the pick up of their children from kindergarten/school. We spoke with Jeppe Kjellberg, the singer, guitarist and composer of the band about what’s cooking now. So, while waiting for the video that will follow the Berlin date, here are some answers to our questions.

How does the creative process develop in your music?

Making music, is a lot about passion. So we need to push each other in new directions regularly. We are very serious about maintaining an open-minded “playful” approach trying to avoid repeating ourselves. Focused on maintaining the intuitive element in the creative process. For instance when we did Through The Walls last year, we did a lot of jamming and ended up doing approximately one hundred and fifty songs. We had weeks of playing around, where nothing really happened, and then suddenly after a long dead creative period we did two of the best tracks on the record in one day. It’s about maintaining the devotion, even though there might be long periods of darkness. Eventually the muses will approach you and lighten up the day.

In Through The Walls siamo stati seguiti dal nostro art-director preferito, Mirko Borsche.

What are the artists / creatives that revolve around your projects in video clip production?

In regards to our video productions we always tried to work with people in whom we have the deepest respect. On Through The Walls we where getting a helping hand with the art-work and visual profile from our all time favourite art-director Mirko Borsche. He helped us in many ways. For instance he helped us getting in contact with the Syrian artist Ayham Jabr, who completely defined the visual image surrounding the release. From HP to albums, singles and beyond. We also had a long correspondence with Mirko about realizing the idea of a visual album release, with a movie accompanying the album. So he picked a load of different movie directors for the project, and we especially loved the style of the swiss artist Jonas Meier. He has a very distinct style, with carefully orchestrated surrealist twists and turns. Everything he does has its own precise perfomance. It’s very explicit, in its own alluring way. It was very easy for us to hook up with him, because everything he was doing represented a direction that we also musically wanted to take. We gave him complete creative freedom to work, so when he told us that we had to travel to India to do the first three movies we didn’t hesitate to support that idea either. (Even though I’ve got trapped in a “Snow World” in Hyderabad for a day wearing shorts, and Tomas Høffding had to walk through a traffic mayhem in crazy heat wearing hot clothes another day. It’s all about trust and supporting each-others visions.

What are your points of reference in music and beyond?

Points of reference for me are life and to try to express fundamental emotions through the music. In a way the narrative is very private. Embracing small personal stories from my own life. The songs becomes more universal when they are founded in something very vulnerable and private. I believe that the listeners can feel that the message is real. And thereby we open up a connection…. Not that the interpretation of the songs have an answer book. They are more like abstract paintings.

How has your sound evolved in recent years?

We are on an on-going journey, that had led us to many different places. Lately we have been trying to explore a very playful electronic path. Trying to embrace a little more madness. Avoiding the most obvious solutions, and trying to keep focusing on the fact that we need to explore new things on a regular basis. We try to keep the expression fresh to ourselves and hopefully you can feel that.

To whom / what do you owe most of your success?

I’m not sure where to start here. I feel we are standing on the shoulders of giants. The list of inspiration is extremely long and in a way scary. We are just very very humble and honoured to play a little part in the evolution of electronic music.

What sets you apart from others and how do you plan to look to the future?

We always try to maintain all our individual differences. I think thats the key of this band. That every person is free floating in their own space. We try to keep the spirit high and open-minded by letting our differences be the force, more than the opposite. It is a very normal phenomena that people start to get divorced because of big ego-issues, but we are not going down that road. I think the main reason that we are always moving forward, is that we try to maintain a strong element of creative freedom within the band.. Regarding the future, we always set ourselves new goals. Thats the fuel of our restless souls. Never to be satisfied.

What is the style you give to your texts?

The Whomadewho style is always a little cryptical, with a personal touch. Lyrics from within the emotional center of three scandinavian men.

What is the aspect that has united you the most in these years of activity?

We have a musical chemistry, that has always been very special. The common feeling of being on the way to new places both musically and geographically.

Tra qualche tempo imprecisato ci aspettiamo l’uscita di alcuni (o tutti) brani sull’etichetta Life And Death.

What can you tell us about your next album? What sound will follow, what topics will it touch?

We are working on two EPs at the same time at the moment. First one might even become a full album, and is a collaboration between the legendary Italian producer DJ-Tennis and Whomadewho. We have recorded 15 songs in Cph. and in Miami over the last year. Pretty far in the process and expect to release some (or all) at some undefined moment on the Label Life And Death. Some of the tracks are being mixed in London in this very moment. Furthermore we have started up a parallel process making our own EP as well. Busy times. The topics vary. But in general we are connecting with madness and the art of the unexpected.

How did the collaboration with Watergate label come about?

We are playing on a regular basis in club Watergate in Berlin. So when they asked us to do this compilation, it felt very natural. Also the timing was perfect, since we at that moment we wanted to step further in to the electronic world. On this compilation we got the chance to collaborate with a lot of different producers/friends that we have been hanging out with or DJ´ed with in the later years. So we are honestly very happy about this release. It has boosted our DJ-career in a way that we didn’t expect. Now the rest of this spring /summer will be spent DJ-ing all around the world.

How will the next live shows be made?

We have a lot of new ideas in terms of re-inventing our live-set. After Through The Walls in 2018, we needed to take a little break and to reflect on a new path for our beloved live-set. So came the DJ-set/hybrid set which became a huge succes due to our drummer Tomas Barfods great abilities within this field. So… at the moment we are in the “lab” considering how to integrate our new electronic approach with our live instruments and vocal abilities. Plan is to premiere a completely new take on our live show at Burning Man in the Nevada Dessert, and to do the same a couple of weeks later in august at a big event in DR koncertsalen in DK.
